We believe that even though media, for the most part, reinforce gender roles and stereotypes, it also has the power to spread messages that fight the hegemonic structures upon which it is built. In addition, the "rules" of society are not set in stone, despite the appearance of their rigidity. Every action taken against the "mainstream," no matter how insignificant it may seem, affects at least one person in some way. This makes it significant (Spade & Valentine, 2011, 566). DeFrancisco and Palczewski state that "even as media reiterate norms concerning gender, media also enable people to work the weaknesses in the norms and challenge common assumptions" (2007, 236). This is exactly what we worked to do. By making a video that plays on the popular "Shit No One Says" YouTube videos, we attempted to make a video that points out and makes audiences critically think about gendered stereotypes that media perpetuate.
