YouTube, the new talent scout by Alex Durward

Typically, artists such as models, singers and beauty professionals are scouted in real life for opportunities in that particular field. However more recently, these artists are being scouted through YouTube instead.

Justin Bieber's manager first discovered him through his YouTube videos in 2007 and he is now one of the world's richest adolescents. Another example of this is Michelle Phan, a make-up artist found on YouTube also in 2007. She now has her own makeup line through L'Oreal and has an incredible following on YouTube.

YouTube has become a place where people can be discovered, but what does this mean for the rest of the population who are not on YouTube. What does this mean for the make-up artists who are working for companies and not on YouTube or the musicians performing on street corners waiting to be discovered?

I found it very interesting to discuss this idea in class. I believe it shows how far YouTube has come and that it is a strong competitor with other media outlets now and for the future.
