This is a texteo condensed from my 2008 blog post about the OurMedia7 Conference in Ghana.
Contextualization
Jim Carrey is an actor and comedian. "Today, Jim continues to make films, paint and sculpt, and lend a voice for various charities and causes through his Better U Foundation."[cit]

There has been much scholarly and popular attention paid to the increasing role of celebrities in contemporary politics, media activism, and public life.

"The image was stark in its defiance: A serene-faced monk raising an upturned alms bowl, indicating his brotherhood's refusal to accept offerings from Myanmar's military junta—a significant gesture in this tiny Buddhist country. This and subsequent images of the monk-led demonstration, quickly dubbed the Saffron Rebellion in September 2007, were beamed out to the world by an intrepid team of journalists working with Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), who put themselves at great personal risk to capture the events through their hidden cameras. The Saffron Rebellion of 2007 was brutally suppressed by the military junta in Myanmar."[cit]

Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan recorded and released the song "Unplayed Piano" in 2005 [cit] to support the "Free Aung Sun Suu Kyi's 60th birthday campaign." They performed the song at the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Olso. Aung Sun Suu Kyi was released on November 13, 2010.

One of my three
founding calls for this project is integrating theory and practice with the local and global. YouTubers can lead and learn from conversations in real communities about the impacts, meanings, and power of the media. This should be done through site-specific and problem-based projects where we create solutions communally.

Visibility for someone, or something that isn't popularly known--an idea, a specific issue, political campaign--or receiving adequate attention can be remedied to varying degrees by those with vivibility leveraging it for the less visible thing in need; like Jim Carey speaking in a video about Burmese political leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Or like:

YOUTUBE IS WHERE WE GO IT ALONE

For visibility to have meaning, impact, or power (beyond the indisputable pleasures of self- or celebrity-recognition), it must be connected to specific social-change goals. For visibility to contribute to social justice it must connect information or images to activist communities. Visibility is neutral in and of itself.
