Origins of this content
This texteo sits on the Fred Fan Rant hidden YouTour so as to be simultaneously "published" in a special issue on fan/remix video at Transformative Works and Culture. It is extracted and refined from a talk presented at the UCSD symposium, Youth Media, Sensory Ability and Visual Culture, 2010.
Contextualization
"Ambivalence is a state of having simultaneous, conflicting feelings toward a person or thing. Stated another way, ambivalence is the experience of having thoughts and emotions of both positive and negative valence toward someone or something." [cit]

"Pop, and to some extent rock, are like sport and fashion industry in that they're about the exuberance of youth." [cit]

Fred Is (Not) Cool

A predictable and definitive ambivalence about Fred (also a subscribe-to-me tool to get hits), falsely announces what proves to be only the most fleeting parody or hatred of Fred (in the speeding up of the voice and the to-the-camera look) while in its place we see instead a shared, youthful exuberance and a linked play with form. Macharlie29 makes an argument that doesn't need words to do be heard. Their preoccupations are time, color, the body, youth, music, movement. The boy points to the girl—she's it, all that—and then thanks you for watching. Looking like nobody but themselves, and certainly not Fred, they maturely say in their private video language what art often tries: hey, Fred may not be cool but see we are, right now, in our way, different from yours, and just like this.
