YouTube opens gateways for musicians to connect with audiences all across America and the globe. It is a platform from which underground and non-mainstream musicians can reach audiences that otherwise could not due to general access and location.
Take for example the New Jersey underground rapper/MC "G.D.P." His material along, with fellow underground New Jersey rappers, is on YouTube for anyone to watch and connect with. While you could argue that Myspace or Facebook provide the same accessibility to the artists material, these two networks present the material in a very different medium that is less dynamic and engaging than a music video, interview, or live performance. The combination of audio and visual media has more potential to inspire interest than simply audio.
YouTube's success in this can be seen in the example of Justin Bieber who got his start from posting videos on YouTube. Now he is a huge international hit.
