The idea of evidence (imaginary and otherwise) is represented in complex and contradictory ways inside of the Imaginary Evidence CD. It relies upon the memory and imagination of the user to engage with and construct (im)possible narratives. It emerges from earlier theatrical work by Forced Entertainment in that it borrows images, sounds, concerns and approaches.

This imaginary and notional evidence also occupies a space of contested notions and critiques of, "evidence" in performance. This digital media does not simply document performance but uses evidence of performance and the elements used to construct it, to allow users to create a kind of performance of their own. Just as digital media rely, at many levels, on a certain invisibility, actual evidence of performance within Imaginary Evidence relies upon imagination and forgetfulness. Complete definition is elusive if not impossible.

New media technology is often differentiated from machine-age technology thorugh the discussion of the evolution of literal human/machine analogies. Imaginary Evidence does something similar by utilizing elements widely accepted as, "evidence" of performance and declaring them, from the very outset, as imaginary. They are impossible from the very start.
